Parasitology

Molecular studies of protozoan parasites – The primary research goal is to obtain a better understanding of the parasite Sarcocystis neurona, the primary cause of equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM). Studies are ongoing to utilize the annotated genome sequence of S. neurona. Other interests include the development of improved serum assays for EPM diagnosis. Additionally, we are investigating approaches to develop an effective vaccine against EPM.
